Reading activity

It is not a new idea.

I guess it is just a recycle of my ideas.

I feel the need to jot it down.

A reading lesson needs to have a flow. A meaningful one.

Reinforcement of target words is important for young learners because they need a lot of practice.

Here is my suggestion, a flow of a reading lesson.

Step one:

Matching activity

Having introduce the words, teacher can ask the pupils to match
i) the words spoken with the pictures shown
ii) the written words with the pictures shown

Step two:

Story telling

Teacher can use the vocabulary to tell a story. Whenever the pupils heard the target vocabulary, pupils can clap their hands or stomp their feet or do any gestures to indicate listening. Pupils also can repeat the target vocabulary whenever they heard them.

This activity can help them focus, thus introducing the vocabulary in a meaningful way. Pupils can listen to the target vocabulary being used in a sentence.

Teacher can also induce fun by reading the story in a lively manner with tone variation and proper pronunciation complete with gestures.

Step three:

Segmenting and blending

With the target vocabulary, teacher can practice segmenting and blending with the pupils.

There are many ways to conduct segmenting, I have come across teachers who practice segmenting by asking the pupils to hold the letters and practice the sound. Then pupils can get close together and try to sound the words.

Step four:

Written assessment

If the time permits, teacher can distribute worksheet to assess the pupils. It can be in many forms such as word search, matching, colouring and such.

I think by designing a reading lesson thoroughly and thoughtfully, a teacher can create wonderful impact on the teaching and learning.

Reading is an important skill to master as pupils progresses through primary school.

If a pupil can read, they can accumulate knowledge and language skills on their own.

I time, I strongly believe that interest will grow and motivation will bloom,

That's all we need for a successful language learning.
