FAQs: Workshop on 21st Century Learning

Tuesday, November 22, 2016

In conducting workshops around the state, sharing knowledge and ideas on 21st Century Learning, I encounter some of these questions from the participants. I wish to address the questions here, and I welcome feedback on the comments section below.

In my workshop, I used the activity called I do, You do and We do.

We do

The activity requires a lot of moving around and it lies heavily on time management skill. It is easy to do but it requires practice.

Okay, let us get back to the questions.

1. How do you check the correct answer?

The correct answer will be determined by the remainders in the group. Teacher will make rounds to check too. An extension of the activity may be a gallery walk, so that others can reward other people's work.

2. How do you do this with low proficiency learners?

The teacher needs to ascertain on the content to be taught based on the proficiency level. Lowering the content to suit the ability will ensure the success of this activity.

3. Can it be done in other subject other than English?

Yes.

4. How to go about doing this activity, for instance in Al-Quran subject?

As fun as this activity may seem, it can cater for a serious subject such as Quran. The flexibility of learning from peers will allow more room for practice without being scrutinise publicly.

Relatively, these are the questions I had. Reflecting on the these, I think that we need to understand our content and tailor it to suit our learners. Then, empowering them with choice and making decisions will have to be our approach towards learning.

Trust your students in delegating their own work, because they have great teachers like you. If you don't trust them, ARE YOU NOT CONFIDENT OF YOURSELVES?
