Culture Skype: Connecting Malaysia and Australia

Tuesday, November 22, 2016

It was FUN!
As the name suggested, we skyped again with Redlands School, Sydney. This time around, we exchanged questions prior to the session. The questions concern on daily activities, preferences and cultural practices.

The session went well and the students from Malaysia were excited and nervous at the same time. As English being the third language learnt in school, the students need to articulate the questions correctly and listen to the answers provided by the Redlanders. The answers to the questions were written by the data enterers.

Hmm...

Traditional dance
Prior to the presentation, the students from Malaysia presented traditional dances from 3 main etnicities in Malaysia, namely Malay, Chinese and Indian dance. The Redlanders looked happy and enjoy the dance very much.

During the debriefing session, the pupils reflected on their feelings and all of them were happy to contribute and participate. The learners also reflected on their strengths and weaknesses based on the session. The result of their reflection were as follows:

100% of the pupils were able to reflect on the session and suggested ways to overcome in relation to the difficulties appropriately. The reflection session proved that this activity managed to discover pupils’ talent, develop interpersonal and intrapersonal intelligence.

Debriefing on the activity

I love to do this activity again and I hope many school will volunteer to participate. Why not make a difference in how we interact with other people, develop a paradigm shift of the curriculum and transform your teaching and learning into an authentic environment?

An activity such as this requires a lot of planning which may involve the pupils participation. In doing so, they will understand the process of doing things and be conscious of the decisions they make. Isn't it all the traits of a 21st Century Learner that we desperately want to to inculcate?
