Remember Perky Piung’s Email Adventure? I blogged about Part 6 previously, which introduced my email-writing module for Year 5 learners. You can read the original post here: [Insert link to Part 6 blog post].

Now, it’s time for the next chapter!

Part 7 is a continuation of the same writing adventure, featuring eight units based on familiar topics from the Year 5 English syllabus. Unlike Part 6, which has two sections for each unit, Part 7 has one section per unit.

The module retains the same three-task format:

• Task 1: Fully Guided — complete the email using a word box.

• Task 2: Partially Guided — complete the email with greater independence.

• Task 3: Independent — write an email of about 60–80 words using information from a visual.

With exam-style visuals, a consistent A4 landscape layout and our cheerful Perky Piung mascot, the aim is to help learners practise writing emails for different purposes while gradually building their confidence.

One unit, three tasks, and plenty of opportunities to write! ✏️

Perky Piung: Pop into Learning Fun! 🐢💗

Teaching writing can be challenging, especially when our learners are still developing the confidence to express their ideas in English. Sometimes, they know what they want to say, but putting those ideas into sentences and organising them into a proper email can feel like a big task.

That is one of the reasons I created Perky Piung’s Email Adventure, a writing module designed to help Year 5 learners explore the purpose and structure of email writing through familiar topics and guided practice.

💌 A Little Adventure, One Email at a Time

Perky Piung’s Email Adventure is organised into eight units, covering a variety of topics that Year 5 learners can relate to, including towns and cities, days, wild animals, school life, food and drinks, sports and hobbies, family and friends, and holidays and travel.

Each unit contains two sections, giving learners more opportunities to practise writing emails for different purposes and audiences.

From describing a favourite wild animal to recommending a holiday destination, learners are encouraged to share information, describe experiences, express preferences and communicate their ideas in writing.

✏️ Three Tasks, Gradually Building Confidence

One of the key features of this module is its three-task approach. Rather than expecting learners to write a complete email independently from the beginning, the activities guide them through progressively more independent writing.

Task 1: Complete the Email

Learners use a word bank to complete a partially written email. This provides vocabulary support and helps them become familiar with useful sentence structures.

Task 2: Complete the Email with Your Own Ideas

Learners begin to personalise their writing by filling in the gaps with their own information and ideas. They still have a framework to follow, but they have more freedom to express themselves.

Task 3: Write Your Email

Finally, learners write their own email of approximately 30–50 words. With less scaffolding, they have the opportunity to apply what they have practised in the earlier tasks.

I hope this gradual progression will make email writing feel less intimidating and help learners develop greater independence over time.

🐢 Meet Perky Piung!

Of course, no Perky Piung resource would be complete without our little turtle friend!

Perky Piung appears throughout the module to make the learning experience more inviting. The worksheets use playful illustrations, clear writing spaces and a consistent layout to help young learners focus on the task while enjoying the adventure.

I also included Perky’s Email Check, a simple checklist that reminds learners to review important parts of their email, from greeting their friend to signing their name.

These small reminders encourage learners to take greater responsibility for checking their own work.

🎨 Designed for the Classroom

The worksheets are presented in black and white, making them practical for printing and photocopying. The illustrations are designed to remain engaging even without colour, while the three-task layout provides a consistent structure across the different sections.

My aim is to create a resource that is both visually appealing and useful for everyday classroom practice.

🌱 Still Growing, Still Learning

Creating teaching materials is always a work in progress. Every classroom brings different needs, and every group of learners reminds me that there is no single approach that works for everyone.

With Perky Piung’s Email Adventure, I hope to provide my learners with a little more guidance, a little more confidence and plenty of opportunities to practise writing for a purpose.

After all, writing is not just about filling in blanks or getting every sentence right. It is about learning to communicate our thoughts and ideas with others.

So, let's open an envelope, sharpen our pencils and begin a new writing adventure with Perky Piung! 💌

Happy teaching and happy writing!

Alhamdulillah.

26 days ago, I finally completed Perky Piung’s Story Island.

As I looked at the finished workbook on my screen, I smiled. It wasn’t because every page was perfect. It was because I remembered where it all began—with a simple idea to help my Year 5 pupils enjoy writing.

When I returned to the classroom, I met learners who were afraid of writing. They struggled to build sentences, lacked confidence, and often stared at a blank page without knowing where to begin. I knew they didn’t need more worksheets. They needed a reason to write.

That was how Story Island was born.

I wanted writing to feel like an adventure rather than an exercise. Instead of asking pupils to complete another page, I invited them to explore an island with Perky Piung, my cheerful turtle companion. Every completed topic earned them five adventure steps. Every pitstop unlocked a new discovery. Most importantly, every sentence they wrote helped them grow—not only as writers but also as confident learners.

Along the way, I made a promise to myself. This module had to feel close to home. So, instead of reading about places they had never seen, my pupils would write about Kuala Terengganu, Pulau Redang, the Crystal Mosque, keropok lekor, Malaysian sea turtles, and even their own school. I wanted them to see that their own surroundings are worth writing about.

Story Island became more than a writing module. It became a reflection of how I believe children learn best—with encouragement, imagination, and a little bit of magic.

Of course, this journey wasn’t one I travelled alone. Every activity was revised, rewritten, and refined countless times. Ideas changed, layouts improved, and new adventures appeared along the way. Looking back, I realise that creating this module taught me as much as it will hopefully teach my pupils.

Next week will be the real beginning.

Story Island will finally meet the children it was created for.

I’m excited. I’m nervous. I’m curious.

Will they smile when they meet Perky Piung?

Will they laugh at the pitstops?

Will they proudly colour their adventure steps?

I don’t know yet.

But I do know this:

If even one child who once believed, “I can’t write,” finishes the book thinking, “Maybe I can,” then Story Island has already achieved its purpose.

To everyone who has supported me, encouraged me, and believed in this little dream, thank you.

And to my future Story Island Explorers…

Perky Piung and I will be waiting for you.

Because here on Story Island…

🌱 Words Grow on Story Island.

“Every great adventure begins with a single step. Every great writer begins with a single word.”
