Thanks to NST sponsorship, we got free newspapers weekly. In the School Times, there are a lot of activities for primary school pupils and secondary students. The articles featured are good and very informative.
I personally love the English Bloopers section and the Etc (English Teacher Corner). I decided to make a collection of these articles and prepare a book to paste it on. A simple scrapbooking would keep the articles safe and easy to access.
Last week, I made use of the exercises in the School Times for my year fives and ones. I find the exercises are suitable and in accordance to the syllabus. The layout is clean and the pictures are clear. The pupils are able to complete the exercises and it gave them a sense of authenticity because the exercises are not from their book.

What a coincidence! It is the International Islamic Fashion Festival, right here in Kangar, and our class learnt the topic related to clothing!

The vocabularies learnt are not much, mainly jacket, vest, hat, cap and dress. These words were derived from the phonics learnt in the previous class. While most of them understand the words, the weaker pupils still need constant drilling in memorizing these words.
In KSSR, the words were repeated through out the week and exercises were done to ensure constant exposure. I don't have high expectations. For the weaker pupils, I am satisfied when they were able to identify the initial and final sound of these words and relate it to the letters. At least, when given a list of words they would be able to guess the words being pronounced.
In the language arts class, the activities were varied. The weaker pupils made paper doll. I asked them to make one clothing item for the doll. The doll reminded me of the ones I used to have during my childhood.
I managed to slot in entrepreneurship in the lesson by asking them to imagine that they are a tailor making dresses, how much they would charge?, while many can't quite figure it out, I hope it tick their mind in some way.
The sentence patterns used |
Based on their drawings of their favourite food, they need to do a short presentation session.
To add to their excitement, I had decorated my chair and convert it to "Reader's Chair".
They were so excited because they get to sit on my chair which is taboo at other times.
The reader |
Many are able to complete without much guidance as they understood the instructions very well.
The other class needed close guidance. However, their response were good and I was proud because of their effort.
Some are really excited! |
Watch Nurlis and Zakwan in action in this video...
I think the class went well. I overheard some of my pupils reciting the lines when they were about to exit the class. Hmm...I guess they did learn something right?
